Officer-involved shooting under investigation in Newberry County

Officials say two Newberry County deputies returned fire after a suspect fired a gun at them.

NEWBERRY COUNTY, S.C. — An officer-involved shooting is under investigation in Newberry County, according to the Newberry County Sheriff’s Office.

Officials say the incident, which involved two officers, started just before 7 p.m. Wednesday when a deputy attempted to stop a vehicle for a traffic violation. When the vehicle attempted to flee from the deputy, a short chase ensued. 

When the suspect saw another deputy approaching from the opposite direction, deputies say he stopped his vehicle and fled on foot. As the deputies gave chase, deputies say the suspect fired a gun at them. The deputies returned fire, striking the suspect. 

The suspect was then taken into custody by the two deputies. Deputies say they found an AR-15 type rifle and a semi-automatic pistol in the immediate area where the suspect was taken into custody.

The suspect who has been identified as 25-year-old Shaheme Marquis Lindsay of Newberry. Officials say Lindsay had active warrants for trafficking crack cocaine, possession of a controlled substance and a general sessions bench warrant for failure to stop for a law enforcement vehicle. The suspect was also wanted for questioning in several shooting incidents by the Newberry County Sheriff’s Office and Newberry Police Department.

The suspect was transported to the hospital. The nature and extent of his injuries are not known at this time.

Neither of the officers were injured during the incident, and law enforcement is not identifying the deputies at this time. Both will be placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of an investigation.

The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division is on scene and will handle the investigation into the shooting. There will also be an internal investigation by the Newberry County Sheriff’s Office.
