DENMARK, S.C. -- Authorities have confirmed that state agents have been called in to investigate a shooting in which a trooper was wounded in Bamberg County.
A spokesperson for the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED) said that the Bamberg County Sheriff's Office and the South Carolina Highway Patrol requested state agents to the county to investigate.
SLED is often requested as an independent agency to investigate shootings that involve law enforcement.
The South Carolina Department of Public Safety later confirmed that the shooting victim is a state trooper who was initiating a traffic stop on U.S. Highway 78 around 3:30 a.m.
The trooper was then taken for medical attention according to the DPS statement. No details regarding the trooper's condition were available.
Roads reopen
Meanwhile, both the local sheriff's office and highway patrol previously announced that Highway 78 near Denmark was shut down due to an ongoing investigation. According to the sheriff's office, the closure extended from Hwy. 321 to McKenna Lane. However, around 1:15 p.m., authorities said the highway had reopened.
While the announcements contain no additional details about the incident that led to the shutdown, the sheriff's office described it as an "isolated incident and added that there is no threat to the community."
