Pizza delivery driver killed off Greystone Boulevard while making delivery, police say

Police are warning delivery workers to take extra precautions during their work and call their employers if they see anything suspicious during a delivery.

COLUMBIA, S.C. — Columbia Police have identified a man who was shot and killed while delivering pizza on Wednesday night.

Police said officers were called to the Tamarind at Stonebridge Apartments on Stoneridge Drive, just off of Greystone Boulevard, around 11 p.m., where they found the victim, 48-year-old Christopher Shirah, unresponsive. He was later pronounced dead at the scene by emergency medical services.

Authorities haven't publicly released a suspected motive for the killing or who may be responsible.

In the aftermath of the shooting, police are warning delivery drivers to take extra precautions. They advise drivers to:

  • Be aware of their surroundings
  • Avoid carrying large amounts of cash
  • Park close to the delivery location
  • Not leave their vehicle running and unattended.

They also suggest drivers contact their employer if:

  • The delivery location is dark at night with limited fixed lighting
  • The delivery location looks vacant or abandoned.
  • They otherwise feel uncomfortable.
