Sumter, SC (WLTX) - Sumter police have arrested a man who they say physically assaulted his mother, then barricaded himself inside a home.

Sumter Police Chief Russell Roark say James Lamar Lyles, 38,  got into a fight with his mother in the middle of the afternoon around 3 PM.  . According to Roark, the woman was able to get away from the house and get help.

The chief says she suffered minor injuries that were treated by EMS personnel.

Lyles then refused to come out of the house when officers arrived. Investigators attempted to contact him by phone to convince him to leave the residence.

Just before 7 p.m., officers went inside, where they say they arrested him without incident.  "This ended very peacefully," Roark said.

As police worked to get him out of the home, a stretch of Alice Drive from Miller Road to Wise Drive was shut down.
