Prosecutors Unable to Appeal Jet Ski Crash Ruling

Prosecutors said they cannot appeal the ruling in a deadly jet ski crash that killed a woman on Lake Marion two years ago.

Clarendon County, SC (WLTX) -- Prosecutors said they cannot appeal the ruling in a deadly jet ski crash that killed a woman on Lake Marion two years ago.

Earlier this month, a judge ruled there was not enough evidence to proceed in the trial for Justin Reed Walters.
Walters was charged with reckless homicide in a jet ski collision that killed 19-year-old Millicent McDonald.

According to Assistant Solicitor of Clarendon County Christopher Durant, the prosecution had presented their case including seven witnesses. After they rested, Durant said the defense made a motion for a directed verdict of not guilty claiming that the state did not have sufficient evidence to move forward.

Judge W. Jeffrey Young granted the motion which led to the end of the trial and the jury being released.

Solicitor Chip Finney tells News 19 he does not have the right to appeal a directed verdict, so his office will not be moving forward with any action and Walters will not be tried again.
