RICHLAND COUNTY, S.C. — A man wanted for crimes several states away was arrested in Richland County on Saturday but not before assaulting deputies and temporarily getting away, authorities say.

The Richland County Sheriff's Department said a man, later identified as 22-year-old Deion King, was spotted by deputies while walking in the 1800 block of Decker Boulevard just 3 p.m. At the time, they were looking for someone in reference to a stolen vehicle.

Deputies said he initially gave them false information, which they confirmed upon checking. He was quickly detained, but the sheriff's department said he began assaulting deputies and temporarily escaped again.

Deputies said he was caught again with the help of K-9 officers and charged with assault, identity theft and fraud. Upon his arrest, the sheriff's department learned his true identity at Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center. That led to additional details that showed him wanted for murder in New York.

The sheriff's department didn't elaborate on what type of injuries the deputy received in the struggle but said he was checked and "is doing fine."
