Investigation into assault on inmate leads to investigation into previous incident at Alvin S. Glenn

Wendell Sholar is facing numerous charges in the case.

RICHLAND COUNTY, S.C. — A guard at Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center is facing charges after an investigation into one assault at the facility led deputies to a previous incident.

The Richland County Sheriff's Department said that, on Jan. 28, 32-year-old Wendell Sholar was among several guards trying to control an inmate. Investigators said that while the inmate was handcuffed, Scholar dragged him up the stairs, slammed him against a wall, and punched him several times. The sheriff's department said guards restrained Sholar and removed him from the inmate's cell, and he was put on leave that day.

Further investigation uncovered allegations of another incident involving Sholar and an inmate on Oct. 17, 2023. The sheriff's department said he was struggling with the inmate and shoved him onto his bead before repeatedly punching the inmate in the head and upper torso.

The sheriff's department said guards intervened in this case and removed Sholar from the cell. However, investigators said he allegedly attempted to reenter the cell to continue attacking the inmate. Guards prevented this from happening, but investigators said he then tried to assault another inmate by "grabbing him by the collar and shoving him.

Sholar was charged with assault and battery of a high and aggravated nature, third-degree assault and three counts of misconduct in office. He has since been booked into the Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center, awaiting a bond hearing.
