COLUMBIA, S.C. — Representatives from the Richland County Sheriff's Department have updated information from an incident that occurred Wednesday morning involving the stabbing of a mother and child.
Deputies responding to the scene at the 200 block of Connie Drive were initially told the child victim was a 4-year-old. Investigators have since learned the child was actually born in July 2021, making him 20 months old.
Deputies arrested William Murray, 37, for allegedly stabbing his sister and her 20-month-old child early Wednesday morning.
The incident occurred shortly after 6 a.m. April 5. Deputies responding to 911 calls at the Trenton Court Apartments in the 200 block of Connie Dr. found witnesses who told deputies they saw a woman running, yelling her child had been stabbed. The apartment complex is off Broad River Road in the St. Andrews area.
Both the woman and child suffered multiple stab wounds to the upper body and were taken to an area hospital. The 20-month-old needed surgery to remove a shred of metal left from the knife.
Murray was taken into custody and charged with two counts of attempted murder.
Investigators learned Murray became angry and retrieved a knife from the kitchen and stabbed the victim and her child.
Murray was treated for minor injuries at a local hospital and released. He was later booked into Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center. He is scheduled to appear in bond court Thursday afternoon.
