RICHLAND COUNTY, S.C. — Authorities say a man who tried to drive into a Richland County grocery store and then walked in screaming has been charged and hospitalized.

The Richland County Sheriff's Department said the call to the Kroger in the 1000 block of Roberts Branch Parkway, off Farrow and Killian roads, initially came in as an active shooter alert, but that wasn't what deputies found when they arrived. Instead, authorities said employees found store personnel wrestling to gain control of an "erratic and screaming" 56-year-old Roger Dukes.

Authorities said investigators learned that Dukes tried to drive into the store and then walked in screaming. He was taken into custody with help from staff and county deputies. He was charged with assault and battery and aggravated breach of peace and is now at an area hospital.
