Gas, urine and bleach tossed on students during high school fight, mom says

Medic was called to examine the students involved as a precaution, CMS said.

MINT HILL, N.C. — A "flammable liquid" was splashed on students during a fight at Rocky River High School on Wednesday, district officials with Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools confirmed.

Two students were fighting in the cafeteria Wednesday morning when the liquid was splashed, CMS said. The district did not provide further information on what the liquid was, but said the school was placed on a modified lockdown as a result to deescalate the incident.

Diesha Hawkins told WCNC Charlotte two of her daughters were in the middle of the incident and had the liquid poured on them.

“The other girl, came up and just tried to pour the opened-up bottle, and, guess, poured it on them," the mom said.

Medic was called to examine the students, CMS confirmed. The mother of two students hospitalized believes her children were splashed with a combination of gasoline, urine and bleach.

Hawkins is pressing CMS to do more with their security.

“I want charges being pressed, and I don't want no more liquids coming through the door, just like you have to get on the airplane," she said. "They check you before you come on the plane. and you can't get no water until you get past security points. So obviously they're gonna have to start doing that here."

Rocky River High School families were asked to speak with their children about appropriate behavior at school and remind them of the consequences of breaking the Code of Student Conduct.
