SALISBURY, N.C. — A school bus driver was hit by a student while trying to break up a fight this week in Salisbury, according to the Rowan County Sheriff's Office.
The fight broke out around 2:40 p.m. on Tuesday, while a school bus from Erwin Middle School was dropping students off on Gold Hill Drive, just south of Interstate 85 and west of East Innes Street.
A student tried to hit another student as the bus stopped. The bus driver tried to break up the fight, then an additional student got involved in the fight, according to the sheriff's office.
At this point, the student who started the fight was hit in the head and face by both of the other students involved.
One of the students, though the sheriff's office has not clarified which student at this time, allegedly jumped onto the back of the bus driver and was trying to reach around him to hit a student when the bus driver was hit in the face in the process.
He hurt his nose as a result, but the sheriff's office said he did not need medical treatment. No students were injured in the fight, the sheriff's office said.
The students involved were referred to juvenile court authorities for charges of simple assault. One of the students was charged with the assault on the bus driver.
The students were ultimately given over to their parents at the scene.
