Grant-funded South Carolina non-profit's director arrested for misusing $44K

Darrel President Sr. is accused of misusing $44,000 in funds intended for a community center project.

FAIRFIELD COUNTY, S.C. — The director of a grant-funded South Carolina non-profit was arrested on Wednesday after a state investigation into funds he allegedly took from the organization for personal use.

Warrants provided by the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED) said that 56-year-old Darrel President Sr. took roughly $44,000 from the Greenbrier Resource Community Development Center (GRCDC) without the knowledge of the non-profit's board of directors.

A warrant affidavit states that the organization received $100,000 in state-funded grants from May 2022 to July 2023 to construct a community center in Fairfield County. Authorities said President withdrew $44,220 from the organization's bank account between May 2023 and February 2024. The affidavit states that President admitted to withdrawing the funds after board members questioned him and began repaying the funds in June 2024.

The investigation revealed that the funds were for personal use, and authorities charged President with breach of trust with fraudulent intent valued at $10,000 or more.
