SUMTER, S.C. — The South Carolina Highway Patrol now says a 12-year-old has died from injuries in a crash that happened around the same time and the same area as a crash that took the life of a 15-year-old.
Sumter County Coroner Robbie Baker confirmed Tuesday that 12-year-old Basir Wells died Tuesday morning, Oct. 29, at Prisma Health Richland in Columbia. An autopsy is scheduled for Friday at the Medical University in Charleston.
The South Carolina Highway Patrol said Wells was struck by a pickup truck traveling east on Britton Road around 6 a.m. on Sunday, October 27.
That's in the same area and timeframe of another collision that killed a teenager. The Highway Patrol said 15-year-old Marvin Butler was hit by a different pickup truck on Britton Road. Butler died at the scene from his injuries.
Troopers said the vehicle that struck Butler was traveling west on Britton Road.
The drivers of both pickup trucks were not hurt.
In addition, Sumter County Coroner Robbie Baker said two other victims were hurt in that same location but law enforcement has not said how they sustained their injuries.
The Highway Patrol has not said if they are looking for any vehicles in connection with this case or if charges could be filed. the incident remains under investigation by the coroner's office and the South Carolina Highway Patrol.
