NEWBERRY, S.C. — A violent altercation unfolded on Monday afternoon during a shooting in the 1200 block of Wilson Road involving two men who officers said fired weapons.
According to Newberry Police Chief Kevin Goodman, the incident began when a man, described as the ex-boyfriend of the female victim, spotted her with another man in a vehicle. Police said they ex-boyfriend opened fire on the car. As he attempted to flee the scene, officers said the male passenger in the victim’s vehicle exited and returned fire. A 1-year-old child was present in the ex-boyfriend’s car during the exchange of gunfire.
Deputies from the Newberry County Sheriff’s Office stopped the suspect a short time later at a convenience store on Wilson Road, approximately 1.4 miles from the scene. He was driving a white vehicle and was taken into custody without further incident.
The victim sustained non-life-threatening injuries and was transported to Prisma Health Richland Hospital by Newberry County EMS, Goodman confirmed.
Two individuals are currently in custody, with charges expected to be announced by Tuesday morning, November 26, 2024. Authorities have yet to release their names.
Chief Goodman emphasized that the event was an isolated incident and noted that the investigation remains ongoing in partnership with the Newberry County Sheriff’s Office.
