Sumter County, SC (WLTX) — An inmate found unconscious at the Sumter County Sheriff’s Office Detention Center on Thursday has died, according to officials with the Sumter County Sheriff's Office.
Authorities say the inmate died early this morning, and the family has been notified.
Officials say Sumter County sheriff Anthony Dennis asked the State Law Enforcement Division (SLED) to assist in the investigation as soon as he became aware of the incident.
While details are limited, the death is one of two incidents currently under investigation at the jail.
The Sumter County Sheriff's Office has been operating the jail since September 2017, after the longtime director of the jail resigned.
