Teen charged with attempted murder in Columbia High School stabbing, sheriff's department says

Authorities said a suspect is in custody but the school is operating on a secure status as a precaution.

RICHLAND COUNTY, S.C. — A 17-year-old has been charged with attempted murder following a stabbing that happened at a Richland County high school on Friday afternoon.

The Richland County Sheriff's Department said 17-year-old Omari Fortenberry was charged after allegedly stabbing another student at Columbia High School. The sheriff's department said deputies responded around 2 p.m. to an assault involving a knife. That knife has since been recovered, the department said.

Richland One School District spokesperson said a student was hospitalized, but that student's condition isn't publicly known. Following the stabbing, emergency medical services personnel took the victim to the hospital, and the suspect was taken into custody.

As a precaution, the school was placed on a secure status lockdown, but school officials said they did not suspect any immediate threat to other students and staff. The sheriff's department said Fortenberry was charged as an adult and taken to Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center.
