'Stun knuckles,' smoke grenades at CAE lead to prison for Columbia man

The items were found by TSA agents as he attempted to board a plane.

COLUMBIA, S.C. — A South Carolina man will spend a year in federal prison for attempting to bring "stun knuckles" and an assortment of other prohibited items into the Columbia Metropolitan Airport.

According to a statement from the U.S. Department of Justice, 51-year-old David Lee Angell was stopped by Transportation Security Administration (TSA) screaming officials as he attempted to board a plane at the airport.

The screening uncovered a number of prohibited items in his carry-on luggage including three smoke grenades, one set of plastic "stun knuckles" - a type of stun gun, three stun batons, two knives, and two cans of capsaicin spray - also known as "pepper spray."

Investigators said that Angell had previous convictions for carrying a concealed weapon in a vehicle, possession of a dangerous weapon, burglary, and resisting a public officer.

The one-year imprisonment sentence is the maximum term for the federal charge and will be followed by one year of court-ordered supervision.
