Sumter County authorities investigate man found shot to death along roadside

The sheriff said authorities are working to identify anyone involved with Diequen Underwood's death

SUMTER COUNTY, S.C. — Investigators are searching for the person - or people - responsible for a man's death after his body was found along a Sumter County road.

The Sumter County Sheriff's Office said that the body of 28-year-old Diequan Underwood was found along Highway 261 near Yorkridge Drive around 7 a.m.

Investigators said that Underwood had died from multiple gunshot wounds.

Sheriff Anthony Dennis said this is the first homicide in the county's jurisdiction in 2023 and his office is working to find all involved in the crime. 

"Mr. Underwood was murdered late last night and he was left along the roadway by someone who disregarded the value of his life," Sheriff Dennis said in a statement. "We are doing everything possible to verify those involved and ensure they are held accountable."

The victim's family has been notified of his death, authorities said.
