SUMTER COUNTY, S.C. — The Sumter County Sheriff’s Office has identified two murder suspects after shots were fired into a vehicle in Rembert on Sunday morning.
32-year-old Jaquen Marquell Jefferson of Sumter County died on Sunday at Prisma Health Tuomey from an apparent gunshot wound, according to Sumter County Coroner Robbie Baker.
The incident happened around 6 a.m. on Sunday on Dinkins Mill Road in the Rembert community.
After interviewing witnesses and gathering evidence, deputies learned that before the shooting incident, the suspects allegedly argued with the victim, made threats, assaulted the victim, and brandished firearms in the parking lot of an area establishment.
Investigators received arrest warrants for the two suspects, 35-year-old Terone Justin McCray and 28-year-old Nia Laprece Wright, both of Rembert, and are currently seeking them.
Sumter County Sheriff Anthony Dennis described the gun violence in this instance as a tragic, isolated incident.
“These suspects will feel the full weight of law enforcement from the Sumter County Sheriff’s Office until they are apprehended. I would advise them to turn themselves in immediately,” he said. “No one can believe they will bring gun violence to our county and escape justice,” he added. The Sheriff continued by saying, "It saddens me how often disagreements lead to gun violence. In this incident, a person lost his life."
