SUMTER COUNTY, S.C. — Authorities in Sumter County are investigating a body found on Saturday morning and a possible connection to an incident that happened hours earlier in Wedgefield.
The Sumter County Sheriff's Office said deputies were dispatched to Byas Road around 9:50 a.m. after 911 operators received a call regarding an unconscious person lying near a home there. Deputies found the body of a deceased person and, through their investigation, determined the person had been shot.
The sheriff's office said they found the victim's vehicle parked on the road. Further investigation determined that their discovery on Saturday morning may have been related to a shooting that happened on Duffie Drive around 2 a.m.
Sheriff Anthony Dennis said investigators are still gathering evidence and speaking with witnesses. The department said it would release additional information as it became available.
Officials said the Sumter County Coroner's Office would release the victim's name once the family had been notified.
