Sumter jail officer gave cell phone to inmate, deputies say

Investigators say the officer gave his personal phone to the inmate.

SUMTER, S.C. — Sumter County deputies have arrested a jail officer who they say gave his cellphone to an inmate. 

Bernard Williams Jr., 29, is charged with contraband.

Officers say on June 27, Williams, who worked at the Sumter County jail, gave the device to an inmate, which is in violation of jail policy. Deputies did not say why Williams would have given the phone to the inmate. 

Officer say Williams admitted to the act.
