Suspect barricades himself in home after firing shots; arrested by Richland County Sheriff's deputies

The incident happened on Zimalcrest Drive Wednesday afternoon.

COLUMBIA, S.C. — A man is now in jail after being charged with strong arm robbery, kidnapping and possession of a stolen firearm. 

According to the Richland County Sheriff's Department (RCSD) were called to the 700 block of Zimalcrest Drive to speak to a victim about a robbery that took place the night before.  The victim told deputies that the suspect, armed with a pistol, had robbed the victim of a gun. 

While deputies were interviewing the victim, the victim told deputies they could see the suspect inside an apartment.  

Deputies went to speak to the suspect and asked other occupants of the apartment to sept outside.  While this was happening deputies heard the suspect firing a gun in the home and saw Akheevius Taylor, 22, go back inside the apartment and barricade himself inside. 

Deputies requested additional help. 

RCSD's Special Response Team (SRT) responded and evacuated the surrounding apartments as a safety precaution and made continuous call outs, while utilizing the drone and K9, instructing Taylor to surrender.

 SRT deployed distractionary devices, at which time Taylor surrendered without incident. Taylor was taken into custody just before 12:30pm. 

A second occupant of the apartment was also taken into custody by RCSD for warrants out of other jurisdictions.

During a search of the residence, investigators located two firearms; both firearms were stolen. One of the firearms was the gun that had been stolen from the victim/caller during the robbery the day prior. The other gun was stolen out of Newberry County.

Taylor is charged with Strong Arm Robbery, Kidnapping, Possession of a Stolen Firearm.
