Suspect in custody after shooting at Kroger on Killian Road

Richland County Sheriff's Department says Sunday shooting stemmed from a verbal argument, not an active shooter incident

COLUMBIA, S.C. — Richland County Sheriff's deputies have arrested a suspect in the shooting incident that took place outside of the Kroger Marketplace on Roberts Branch Parkway, off Farrow Road, on Sunday afternoon.

Deputies responded to a call of an active shooter and arrived on the scene shortly before 2:30 p.m. Sunday, August 18. Upon arrival, deputies witnessed Kroger employees subduing the suspect, later identified as Lateef Carnegie. The employees had also disarmed Carnegie of the handgun he used during the shooting.

According to the Richland County Sheriff's Department (RCSD) incident report, Carnegie and another man got into a verbal disagreement outside of the grocery store. Carnegie became "highly upset" and pulled a handgun from his waist and started shooting in the parking lot. A vehicle sustained damage, but no person was injured during the incident.

Deputies secured the firearm and transported Carnegie to jail without further incident. Carnegie is being held at Alvin S Glenn Detention Center on charges of attempted murder, use of a firearm under the influence and breach of peace aggravated in nature.
