Goose Creek, SC (WLTX) - Law enforcement officials say the suspect in an overnight shooting of a Berkeley County Sheriff's Deputy has died from what appears to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

A spokesman for the North Charleston Police Department says a SWAT team found the suspect deceased inside a home on Bexley Street in North Charleston after a standoff. Officials said he was bleeding and injured in the home when officers first responded. Three other people were able to get out of the home.

The Berkeley County Sheriff's Office say the deputy was shot just after midnight while on patrol off of Red Bank Road in Goose Creek. The deputy, who was wearing body armor, was shot multiple times. The specifics as to the number and locations of the shots is not being released at this time.

Chief Deputy Mike Cochran says the female deputy is in stable condition at a local hospital. The deputy has been with the Sheriff's Office for approximately 2.5 years with 1 year on patrol.

Cochran says a vehicle connected to the incident prompted them to investigate near Durant starting at 12:58 a.m. Berkeley and Charleston county deputies, officers from North Charleston, Goose Creek, Hanahan and a K-9 unit are at that scene.

SLED was called in to handle the investigation as is standard procedure for shootings involving a law enforcement officer.

This is a developing story and we will continue to update this article as information becomes available.
