BOWMAN, S.C. — A traffic checkpoint led to the seizure of a variety of illegal narcotics and drug paraphernalia over the weekend, according to Orangeburg County deputies.
Deputies say the safety checkpoint on Mozel Lane was set up this past weekend. After a home on Moael Lane was identifed as a possible "drug house," deputies say they obtained search warrants for the home.
A large quantity of illegal narcotics, a firearm, ammunition, and digital scales were seized, according to Orangeburg County Sheriff Leroy Ravenell.
“This is a perfect example of the citizens of this county caring about their community, where they live, and their children’s safety,” the sheriff said. “This operation was based on the community giving us a lead here or there and we turned that into three arrests and drugs taken off the streets.”
Ravenell said Elijah Grant, 24, and Aretha Brooks, 55, both of Mozel Lane in Bowman were each charged with trafficking cocaine, trafficking methamphetamine, possession of a weapon during a violent crime, possession of ecstasy, possession of a controlled substance (Xanax), and possession with intent to distribute marijuana.
Emmanuel Johnson, 35, of Rowesville was charged with one count of trafficking methamphetamine.
“This is a tribute to the community, they want their community safe, and we are more than happy to oblige,” Ravenell said. “And we’re committed to continuing these efforts in the Bowman community.”
