24-year-old charged with attempted murder in Chapin

CHAPIN, S.C. — Chapin Police, with assistance from the Newberry County Sheriff's Office, arrested a 24-year-old man and charged him with attempted murder stemming from a stabbing that occurred early Sunday morning in Chapin.

Police officers responding around 2 a.m. to a report of a stabbing at Tipsy Toad Tavern at 103 Beaufort St. began collecting evidence and took statements from several witnesses at the scene who positively identified the suspect as Jacob Adam Riddle. 

Riddle was seen stabbing the victim in the back, prompting another individual to attempt to intervene. The other individual was cut with the knife while struggling to get Riddle off of the victim. Riddle was able to escape in a vehicle while the victim was taken to Lexington Medical Center for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries.

Newberry Sheriff's deputies and Chapin Police later arrested Riddle at his residence in Little Mountain.

He has been charged with attempted murder, assault and battery second degree, and possession of a weapon during the commission of a violent crime. Riddle was booked into Lexington County Detention Center.
