WASHINGTON — An investigation is underway in Northwest, D.C after a U.S. Secret Service agent fired their gun while on duty early Tuesday morning.
The Metropolitan Police Department's Internal Affairs Division is investigating the officer-involved shooting that occurred just after 1:30 a.m. in the 2900 block of Stephenson Place NW. Investigators say a Secret Service special agent, working on a protective assignment, saw a sedan with multiple people inside. This crew was reportedly attempting to open car doors along the street. The agent then walked up to the group to see what was going on.
This is when a confrontation happened, during which the agent fired their service weapon. No injuries have been reported, and there is no evidence to suggest anyone was struck. The suspects ran away, prompting police to issue a lookout.
Authorities confirmed that there was no threat to anyone in the area, and none were harmed during the incident. Following the Internal Affairs' investigation, an independent review by the U.S. Attorney’s Office will follow.
