Two dead, one injured in early morning West Columbia shooting; police seek answers in ‘isolated incident’

Police identified a 17-year-old and a 29-year-old killed in a West Columbia shooting; a third person was wounded and later released.

WEST COLUMBIA, S.C. —  The Lexington County Coroner's Office has identified two people who died in an early morning Sunday shooting that also wounded a third person.

West Columbia Police said the shooting happened around 3:40 a.m. in the 900 block of Center Street. The Lexington County Coroner's Office said that one victim, 17-year-old Kashaan Damon Sims of Columbia, died at the scene due to multiple gunshot wounds to the upper body. A second victim, 29-year-old Alvin Davonte McDaniel Jr. of Winnsboro, was taken to the hospital with multiple gunshot wounds to the lower body. He later died. The third victim was taken to an area hospital for a gunshot wound and was later released.

Few details are available, and while authorities said no one is in custody at this point, they don't believe there is any danger to the general public and called this an isolated incident. The coroner's office, the West Columbia Police Department and the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED) Crime Scene Investigation Unit are still investigating.

Police ask anyone with information about the shooting to call Crime Stoppers at 1-888-CRIME-SC.

This is a developing story. Check back for updates as they become available.
