RICHLAND COUNTY, S.C. — A man is dead in what the Richland County Sheriff's Department believes was a self-defense shooting that happened earlier Sunday morning at a woman's apartment.
Authorities said the shooting happened around 5 a.m. at Greenbrier Apartments at 100 Willow Oak Drive when the woman said she discovered a man banging on her door. She told investigators that the man got inside as she approached the door. She stated she then retrieved her gun from her purse and asked the man to identify himself. She told investigators that he continued to approach, and that's when she shot the man. Authorities said he died from his wounds.
She then called law enforcement, the sheriff's department statement said.
Authorities said the woman shared the apartment with two children and said they weren't harmed in the incident. After interviewing the woman at sheriff's department headquarters, she was released and not charged as the shooting was determined to be self-defense.
