Woman Writes Letter to Judge Requesting Leniency for SC Kidnapper Gloria Williams

A woman from Margate, Florida wrote judge Marianne Aho a letter to plea for leniency in sentencing for Gloria Williams.

A woman from Margate, Florida wrote judge Marianne Aho a letter to plea for leniency in sentencing for Gloria Williams.

Williams will be sentenced on Friday for the 1998 kidnapping of newborn Kamiyah Mobley from a Jacksonville hospital. Williams raised Mobley as her own daughter with the name Alexis Manigo until she was 18 years old.

Williams is facing up to 20 years in prison for the charges as part of a plea deal.

The letter, dated June 3, from Kenia Brown, begins with her concerns about the disparities in sentencing women of color. "I have a significant concern about the sentencing of Mrs. Wililams when in the past six months I have read news reports of a 90-year-old white male receiving house arrest for sexually assaulting a 5-year-old, and a multitude of young white female teachers receiving ridiculously minimal sentencing for raping 12-year-old to 17-year-old students they were responsible for teaching."

She brings up a list of concerns she has about unclear facts of the case as an outsider sees it.

"As a judge, I am sure you are aware when it comes to humans: anything is plausible," Brown continues. She says that the court of public opinion smells blood in the water and wants Williams' head for what happened but hopes the judge factors in that the time has passed and Mobley lived a "charmed, happy, well adjusted life in a spiritual home."
