ORANGEBURG, S.C. (AP) - The Croatan Indian Tribe is conducting an archaeological dig on property in Orangeburg County they planned to use for a cultural center. The tribe bought 57 acres of land for an Orangeburg Native American Living Village Museum/Cultural Center in 2003. Artifacts were found dating back to 8,000 B-C while the land was being cleared. Tribal members have found arrowheads, spears, knife tips, grinding stones, grooved axes and pottery at the site. Boiling stones, banner stone and even Civil War buttons and bullets alsohave been found. Chief Ricky Running Wolf Bruner has applied for grants from the state Department of Archives and History to determine the historical significance of the site and its potential eligibilityfor placement on the National Register of Historic Places.
