CLEMSON, S.C. — In a report dated November 25, 2019, three fraternities at Clemson University have been placed on probation for various offenses, including alcohol and hazing violations.
The report, made available through the SC Tucker Hipps Transparency Act, details incidents involving Delta Chi, Phi Delta Theta, and Chi Phi fraternities.
Chi Phi was found in violation of forcing new members to consume alcohol following the acceptance of their bids on Sept. 13, 2019. As a result, the chapter had to conduct a four-week new member education program approved by the chapter's national office and Clemson's Associate Director of Risk Management; and hold individual conduct proceedings for chapter members who coordinated the event violating polices.
The fraternity is on disciplinary probation until May 31, 2020.
Phi Delta Theta members were charged with disruption of community and ethical standards after not being truthful and forthcoming during an investigation interview process on Sept. 20, 2019. Sanctions imposed include and internal review of the membership to determine who was involved in reported incidents as well as who interfered with the interview process; the chapter will conduct a revision of their new member plan in conjunction with Phi Delta Theta national headquarters and Clemson's Office of Fraternity and Sorority Life before accepting new members; the chapter must host a member of the Phi Delta Theta national headquarters staff during the Spring 2020 semester for a series of meetings with chapter executive officers and members to emphasize the New Member Education process.
The fraternity is on disciplinary probation until May 31, 2020.
Delta Chi was found in violation of hazing and disruption of community and ethical standards after new members associated with the fraternity were required to participate in acts of personal servitude, among other concerns on Oct, 16, 2019.
Delta Chi national headquarters imposed the following sanctions: the chapter must cease and desist from hazing and must abide by Delta Chi Law and the Risk Management Policy of the Fraternity; the chapter had to submit a written statement, signed by the chapter's executive board, that all prohibited conduct had been stopped by Dec. 21; the chapter was assessed a fine of $2,850 and placed under conservatorship until May 31, 2020; all active and associate members must undergo a full membership review conducted by the International Headquarters staff of face inactive status or be released from Delta Chi; members found responsible for facilitation of hazing acts will be placed before the Board of Regents for full expulsion from Delta Chi; the chapter must create and install an Associate Member Education & Support Committee by Jan. 17, 2020, that will oversee an education program, meet individually with associate members to discuss concerns of fair and respectful treatment of all members, and coordinate and facilitate a presentation/workshop at the beginning of the rush season that would cover associate members' Bill of Rights, reality-based hazing prevention and reporting structure, and expectations of associate members. In addition, the chapter's executive board must attend and write a report on the "Reality-Based Hazing Prevention" webinar by Jan. 31, 2020, and delegates must attend both the Regional Leadership Conference and the International Convention in 2020. Finally, all associate member activities will take place on the campus of Clemson University for the duration of the Corrective Action period, which will end on Dec. 31, 2021, if no further violations occur.
