COLUMBIA, S.C. — Affordable housing is an issue in South Carolina.
When a child is raised in an unstable home environment, it can affect their school performance. To help remedy that situation, Richland County School District One, in partnership with the Columbia Branch of the NAACP, has been hosting a series of free housing clinics for parents and guardians of children enrolled in the district's schools.
Families attending the seminar can get free assistance with financial issues and other problems they might face with their homes.
On Saturday, March 9, a special housing clinic will begin with a session on tenants' rights and evictions. Tenants and renters can learn about
- habitability issues such as mold, broken fixtures, damaged windows and doors
- your rights during illegal evictions or a landlord not following HUD guidelines
- refusal to return security deposits
- public assistance
- employment
- foreclosures
While the clinic is free, you must register to attend. You can register by clicking the link here or by scanning the barcode below. The Saturday, March 9, clinic will begin at 9 a.m. with an information session on evictions, with the direct services portion running from 9:30 a.m. to noon.
Two more sessions are scheduled for April 23 at CA Johnson High School and May 6 at Hopkins Middle School. Both sessions will be held from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.
