Want to help name a new school in Orangeburg County? Here's how

The Orangeburg County School District (OCSD) is actively seeking community input regarding the naming of a new elementary school.

ORANGEBURG, S.C. — The Orangeburg County School District (OCSD) is actively seeking community input regarding the naming of a new elementary school scheduled for construction in the eastern region of the county. The district highly values the insights and suggestions from its community members and encourages participation from everyone in this pivotal decision.

To facilitate this process, a School Name Committee has been established. The committee's primary purpose is to review naming nominations for the unnamed OCSD facilities in the eastern region, including schools, central office locations, and particular areas within schools like libraries and sports facilities.

The School Name Committee comprises:

•Three (3) school administrators from St. James Gillard Elementary School, Vance Providence Elementary, and Holly Hill Elementary School.

•Three (3) teacher representatives from the mentioned schools.

•Three (3) school support of year representatives from the mentioned schools.

•Three (3) parent representatives from the mentioned schools.

•One (1) community representative each from St. James Gillard Elementary School, Vance Providence Elementary School, and Holly Hill Elementary School.

Criteria for Naming:

When proposing a name for a facility or portions thereof, the following criteria should be kept in mind:

1.The proposed name should be appropriate.

2.The name should be timeless and stand the test of time.

3.Special consideration may be given to names that resonate or have a special meaning for the students attending.

4.Sections of school facilities, like libraries and gymnasiums, should be named in line with their educational purpose.

Timeline of Events:

October 11 – October 30: Open window for Public Suggestion of Names, Colors, and Mascot.
