ORANGEBURG, S.C. — SC State 1890 Extension at South Carolina State University has a new Midlands director.
SC State Public Service & Agriculture (PSA) announced Christopher Green, M. Ed, GCDF, as its new 1890 Extension Midlands Region director, serving Barnwell, Bamberg, Calhoun and Orangeburg counties. Green began his role Nov. 2023.
In his role, Green will oversee the various extension program initiatives, including 4-H youth development; community and economic development; education, innovation, and support; family, nutrition, and health; and sustainable agriculture and natural resources.
Green is also responsible for expanding the Midlands program’s footprint within its various communities and raising awareness with citizens who are not familiar with the SC State 1890 Research & Extension program.
Green says his goal as the new director is to bring consistency with building relationships within the community.
“I want to make sure that we [1890] are having constant engagement and communication with our community and community constituents before, during and after any programs, workshops or events that we host or are participating in,” noted Green. “We cannot be a one-and-done program where people only see us once a year, we must constantly provide support and services throughout the year, and therefore establishing trust and becoming that main resource within the Midlands region.”
Green is currently working to address food security issues in his region by providing access to fresh produce. He anticipates hosting a farmers market in Bowman in June.
Green’s previous roles include serving as a director of recruitment at the University of South Carolina-Salkehatchie. He also has held positions as a GEAR UP project director, career technical training manager for the U.S. Department of Labor, Job Corps, and has experience as a lobbyist for legislative congressional meetings.
Green received his Master of Education in professional school counseling and Master of Science in Individual and Family Development from SC State University and his Bachelor of Science in Child and Family Development from Benedict College (Columbia, SC).
The Cooperative Extension Service, the largest outreach program of Clemson University and South Carolina State University, aims to extend the knowledge and resources of both universities and the USDA to the people of South Carolina.
