Columbia, SC (WLTX) -- Spring Valley High student Alex Dawson has a big summer and fall ahead of her.
She's one of only 12 students in the country that has been accepted into the Ocean Exploration Trust Honors Research Program, to focus on marine biology studies.
Dawson will spend four weeks this summer at the University of Rhode Island, to learn what marine scientists do on oceanic expeditions.
In the fall Alex heads to the Caribbean as her second part of the Ocean Exploration Trust program to work along side scientists aboard the research ship Nautilus, operated jointly by the University of Rhode Island, NOAA, The Sea Research Foundation, and National Geographic, among others.
Spring Valley High's Advanced Placement Environmental Science class offered by teacher Dale Soblo, and Dawson, who's always loved marine biology, says she was inspired by Mr. Soblo's class.
We wish Alex all the best of luck in her studies this summer and fall, and look forward to a future of great things for her!
