ORANGEBURG, S.C. — It's a busy day for the fourth grade students at Brookedale Elementary School in Orangeburg. Their teacher, Herman Jamison is teaching them the importance of mathematics.
"One time I was afraid to do decimals," said Victor Cooper. "Mr. Jamison taught me how to do it and I felt better. Now I just zoom through the book."
Being afraid isn't an option in this classroom, because these students have an "I Can" mindset.
"You don't want to back down on something, because then you won't try it anymore," said Cooper.
Jamison teaches math, science and health. He knows those subjects can sometimes be a challenge, but he has unique ways to encourage and promote learning.
"We have to do things that connect with them," said Jamison. "I do dance moves and try to make connections to different types of video games.
When we stopped by to surprise Mr. Jamison as the News19 Teacher of the Week, his students were playing a game that required them to use their skills, but also work as a team.
"We all got together and had to figure out what fractions are equal to each other," said Mariah Guinyard.
Jamison says he loves making a difference in his community, because in his opinion, children don't care how much you know, until they know how much you care.
"I do what I do, because I love what I do," said Jamison. "Education is a passion for me. It's a daily walk of life for me."
If you know an educator like Mr. Jamison who deserves to be recognized for their dedication and hard work in the classroom, email us at TOW@WLTX.com.
Each nomination will be reviewed and we could show up next week to surprise your favorite teacher.
