Columbia, SC (WLTX) -The City of Columbia is being ordered to pay $1.5 million in fines and cleanup costs for sewage spills.
The city is being fined nearly $500,000 and must also spend $1 million to deal with flooding and to clean parts of three streams flowing into Columbia rivers.
City manager Teresa Wilson says the city has plans to improve its sewer system. They laid out the plans of the Clean Water 20-20 Program Tuesday.
Columbia has been criticized in the past for using money from its water and sewer fund for unrelated projects.
