WASHINGTON D.C., DC — The Food and Drug Administration has expanded a warning about a popular over-the-counter dietary supplement that some people use for weight loss.
In January, the FDA warned that several products labeled tejocote (Crataegus mexicana) root or Brazil seed tested positive for toxic yellow oleander (Thevetia peruviana). The poisonous plant native to Mexico and Central America can cause neurologic, gastrointestinal and cardiovascular issues that can be severe or even fatal.
Symptoms may include nausea, vomiting, dizziness, diarrhea, abdominal pain, heart changes or arrhythmia.
This month, the FDA reported another product, Green ELV Nutrition brand Elv Control Herbal Supplement, tested positive for yellow oleander. The agency said it's received reports of adverse reactions after taking the product, including one serious case.
Many of the products were sold on Amazon and other online outlets. They're also marketed as Raiz de Tejocote and Mexican Hawthorn. See the full list of products from the FDA.
A few manufacturers initiated voluntary recalls after the first warning was issued. The FDA is looking at other actions to ensure none of the toxic products are being sold.
