State program provides free medical equipment at event

The giveaway included a variety of medical devices and support equipment all available for free.

COLUMBIA, S.C. — Life just got a little easier for those with mobility issues due to a medical equipment giveaway from one local program.

On Friday, the South Carolina Assistive Technology Program (SCATP) hosted its annual free-for-all event in northeast Columbia. The giveaway included a variety of medical devices and support equipment, all available for free.

Program manager Rachell Johnson says anyone can receive equipment from the group.

"Anyone can come; they either have a disability themselves, or they are coming to pick up something for a family member, or maybe they're a caregiver for someone," said Rachell Johnson, the program manager for SCATP.

In 2023, the Assistive Technology Program saved South Carolinians over $220,000 in equipment costs.

If you missed Friday's event, don't worry. The program is ready to help year-round. For more information, visit the South Carolina Assistive Technology website or call 803-935-5263.
