COLUMBIA, S.C. — Calling all crafters, church groups, and sewing circles! Prisma Health Children's Hospital is seeking volunteers to create kid-friendly surgical caps for pint-sized patients awaiting surgery or treatments at the Columbia hospital.

The Sew CAPtivating surgical cap program, launched about 14 years ago, provides every child scheduled for a procedure a chance to choose a special surgery cap to wear and keep as a memento.

The hospital's Child Life specialists launched the program as a way to provide compassion and caring assistance to patients and their families during what can be a stressful time in a child's life.

Child Life Specialist Gayatri Reddy said, “We are seeking more volunteers to help keep a fun selection of caps always available for kids who need them. A kid-friendly surgical cap may seem like a small thing, but having the opportunity to choose a cap can make a scary time easier to face.”

The Sew CAPtivating project is easy and fun for anyone who loves to sew or is just learning to sew and is looking for a beginner-friendly project.

To learn more about Sew CAPtivating or volunteering, contact Prisma Health's Child Life program at 803-434-2617. Surgical cap guidelines can be found at the surgical cap program's webpage.
