COLUMBIA, S.C. — A Columbia farm wants to educate other farmers on everything hemp-related.
Coming up on May 9 and 13, City Roots will host workshops for farmers and the general public on the production process of growing hemp.
With a now 5 million seed capacity, the organic farm will have enough transplants, clones and seeds to span several hundred acres of hemp.
"We're really excited about this we've been around for a decade but we've never had the opportunity to grow hemp" said Eric McClam, co-owner and farm manager at City Roots.
McClam says workshop participants will leave with an array of hemp education.
"It's all from seed to sale," he said. "From how to grow your seed in your greenhouse and how to start it as a baby plant and then how to propagate it in the greenhouse under those conditions of all the lighting watering and fertility schedules and then going out into the field. So how are you going to planet it? Are you going to playing it by hand or mechanically by tractor? Then weed control and pest maintenance how do you cure it and how do you store it and then where do you sell it and how do you get it extracted? We have a lot of these answers and we just want to share."
Soon the organic farm hopes to sell edibles and other hemp projects on site.
