High Court: Catawba Indians Can't Offer Video Poker

The state Supreme Court says the Catawba Indian Nation may not offer video poker on its reservation; court battle may not be over yet.

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) -- The state Supreme Court says the Catawba Indian Nation may not offer video poker on its reservation. The court ruled Monday that the nation's 14-year-old land settlement with the state did not allow the tribe to offer video gambling, which is illegal in South Carolina.Tribe attorney Dwight Drake says he plans to appeal to the U.S. Supreme Court. The Supreme Court did offer some good news to the tribe, ruling that the state cannot impose a fee of 18 dollars a person for the tribe's bingo customers. The tribe shut down its bingo hall in Rock Hill last year, saying a combination of the fee and the state lottery made bingo operations unprofitable.
