Lexington, SC (WLTX) --- A Lexington Police Officer has died after a long battle with cancer.

The Lexington Police Department says that early this morning, active duty officer Art Rish passed away.

Rish was an 11 year veteran of the department, beginning his career in the Patrol Division as a road officer. In 2007, he was assigned to the Office of Professional Standards, and was a key part in preparing for the department's first National CALEA Accreditation. Rish was promoted to Inspector in April 2010, and was a member of the Emergency Response Team.

He was recently recognized as employee of the quarter, and the department's Overall Employee of the Year for 2013, a culmination of his continued work ethic despite his ongoing health battle.

The department says Inspector Rish was active in and known throughout the community.

Visitation will be held at Barr-Price Funeral home from 6-8pm Sunday March 30, 2014. The funeral will be held at Red Bank Baptist Church on Monday March 31, 2014 at 11am.

The department says that "Art was a tremendous asset to the Lexington Police Department and will be truly missed by all whom admired him for his unwavering integrity and character no matter the adversity."
