CHARLESTON, S.C. — The body of Sen. Fritz Hollings lay in state at at the State House building in Columbia Monday.
His body was brought into the capitol building Monday morning by a South Carolina Highway Patrol honor guard.
For hours, visitors could see his casket, draped in an American flag, in the rotunda of the State House building. Among those who paid their respects were South Carolina Gov. Henry McMaster.
Hollings died April 6 at his home on Isle of Palms. He was 97.
Three days of mourning are planned for Hollings, one of the last of the larger-than-life Democrats who dominated politics in the South.
A funeral is planned Tuesday at The Citadel, where former Vice President Joe Biden and Gov. Henry McMaster are among the speakers.
