4 rescued, 106 evacuated in Chimney Rock area over weekend

First responders were able to successfully rescue four people and a dog, and evacuate 106 people, two cats, and two dogs.

CHIMNEY ROCK, N.C. — First responders rescued four people and evacuated 106 people over the weekend in the Chimney Rock area in the aftermath of Helene.

Pamlico County Emergency Management said their rescue swimmers were able to swim across the river after abandoning their boat to reach Chimney Rock.

They then began assisting the Chimney Rock Fire Department with rescues and evacuations.

As a result, they were able to successfully rescue four people and a dog, and evacuate 106 people, two cats, and two dogs.

Pamlico County Emergency Management said the rescues and evacuations were able to be accomplished with no electronics, no cell phones, and limited radio access.
