Airman Assigned to Shaw AFB Identified as Victim of Fatal Accident

A senior airman assigned to Shaw Air Force Base was killed in an accident Sunday morning.

Shaw Air Force Base, SC (WLTX) — Officials with Shaw Air Force Base in Sumter have identified the victim of a fatal accident Sunday as an airman assigned to the base.

Senior Airman Trevor Moheit, 24, was killed in an accident on St. Paul Church Road near Cains Mill Road in Sumter County around 7:15 a.m. Sunday, officials say.

Moheit was an aircraft structural maintenance apprentice assigned to the 20th Equipment Maintenance Squadron (EMS), who had served in the Air Force since November 18, 2014, according to 20th FW Public Affairs Media Section Chief Nathan Allen.

"Trevor's sudden passing is a tragedy," said Lt. Col. Casey Crabill, 20th EMS commander. "He was an outstanding maintainer who rose to every challenge presented to him and he could always be counted on to lift others. Moheit, who was wearing a seatbelt, was traveling west on St. Paul Church Road, when the truck veered off the road, sideswiping an unoccupied, disabled vehicle on the side of the road before running off the road, up an embankment, hitting several trees and overturning in his pickup truck, according to Lance Cpl. Matt Southern with S.C. Highway Patrol says

The accident remains under investigation by the South Carolina Highway Patrol.
