American Red Cross of South Carolina prepares for Hurricane Helene

Governor Henry McMaster issued a state of emergency as South Carolina prepares for the potential effects of Hurricane Helene.

COLUMBIA, S.C. —

Governor Henry McMaster issued a state of emergency as South Carolina prepares for the potential effects of Hurricane Helene

“We have at least 15 red cross South Carolina volunteers deployed to the North Florida area to help that impacted area down there as the storm comes through,” Nick Gibson with the American Red Cross of South Carolina said.

Hurricane Helene is strengthening and making its way toward the U.S Gulf Coast. The entire state of South Carolina is under a tropical storm warning, with heavy rains and winds expected in the midlands.

“We have mobilized and ready volunteers, readily available in the state of Carolina as well, if anything happen here, particularly to the up-state area, but if anything, else happens in the state of Carolina we have volunteers spread out throughout the entire state,” Gibson said.

Disaster trained volunteers will help with downed trees and help clients get back on their feet if their home is seriously impacted from the storm.

“Make sure that you have any coverings on windows, just in case if the storm brings a lot of wind and things of that nature, which it probably will. Also, bring anything like lawn chairs from the front or backyard of your area inside just to make sure that everything is inside and won't blow away because of this hurricane,” Gibson said.

If you or your family need assistance from the Red Cross, you can call 1-800-RED CROSS.
