Armed and dangerous fugitive believed to have left SC, police say

Hamilton is considered armed and dangerous, and police warn people not to approach him.

FOLLY BEACH, S.C. — Folly Beach police say a wanted Florida man who is considered armed and dangerous and had been seen several times in the Folly Beach area is believed to have left the state. However, the continue to ask residents to lock their cars and homes.

Police are seeking John Thomas Hamilton of Florida for multiple felony warrants. 

Hamilton is described as a white male with brown hair and brown eyes, who stands about 5’09” and weighs around 202 pounds. He is approximately 36-years-old and was last seen only wearing black shorts.

Tuesday afternoon, Folly Beach police said Hamilton had been spotted in Jacksonville, Florida.

Monday afternoon, police had said Hamilton was still on loose. However, they said two possible sightings reported Sunday indicated he may be heading towards James Island. Police asked the public to stay vigilant and report any further sightings to dispatch at (843) 588-2433.

On Sunday, police had said they believed Hamilton was trying to get off the island and back to Florida but they had his phone and his vehicle. 

On Saturday, Folly Beach police had said Hamilton was last seen in the area of 900 block of East Cooper running into the marsh. On Sunday, police said the last potential sighting was Saturday evening near Folly River, between 7th and 8th streets east.
