Army identifies soldier who died at Fort Jackson last week

The 36-year-old from Gladwin, Michigan was found at his on-post residence.

COLUMBIA, S.C. — The Army has identified the soldier who died at Fort Jackson last week as a former drill sergeant. 

Fort Jackson officials said Sgt. 1st Class Joshua A. Alfieri died on March 21. The 36-year-old from Gladwin, Michigan was found at his on-post residence after Fort Jackson Directorate of Emergency Services received a 911 call. 

Alfieri was serving with the 120th Adjutant General Battalion (Reception).  The military said Alfieri served more than 15 years in the Army had had been a drill sergeant until November of 2023. 

His awards and decorations include the Drill Sergeant Identification Badge, Army Commendation Medal (2 times), Army Achievement Medal (3 times), Army Good Conduct Medal (4 times), National Defense Service Medal, Iraq Campaign Medal w/Bronze Service Star, Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Korean Defense Service Medal, Noncommissioned Officers Professional Development Ribbon (3 times), Army Service Ribbon, Overseas Service Ribbon (2 times), Meritorious Unit Commendation (Army), Overseas Service Bar.

Fort Jackson said their leadership is continuing to provide support to the family and teammates. 

“Losing a teammate is never easy,” Maj. Gen. Jason E. Kelly, Fort Jackson commanding general said. “It’s tough on us all because we place so much emphasis on team cohesion and taking care of each other”.
